Mediation Services Provided
The State of Ohio Supreme Court has authorized individuals with approved training to mediate both civil and family mediation. In a world that thrives on conflict It is important that we exempliy the attitude of the beattitudes and be a peacemaker to all people in need.
Civil Mediation
Most non-violent disputes can be mediated. This includes, but is not limited to, money and non-money disputes between neighbors, family members, landlords and tenants, customers and businesses, and roommates. Disputes involving community groups and organizations can also be addressed through mediation.
There is a wide range of civil cases. Civil cases can involve litigation between two companies about a contract, employment discrimination, consumer ldisputes, accidents or personal injury cases or any number of other disputes about the rights and duties between two parties. Mediation is often the best way to resolve a civil conflict. If selected early, mediation saves time and money for both parties in legal expenses.
Family Mediation
A family may include a wide range of interpersonal relationships. For example, a family could include: Two parents (married or not) and one or more childrenA childless married couple; A single parent and one or more children; A parent and a foster child; A household including a group of people such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Family mediation can be provided for any of the people indicated above. It may mean mediation between people who are divorcing or who are in a custody fight. It also may mean mediation between other family members such as a parent and a teenager or between parents and grandparents who wish to work out conflicts and improve their communication.
No matter how your particular family is structured, family mediation will focus on finding win/win solutions and allowing parties to go forward with more understanding of each other's points of view than they had previously.
Divorce Mediation
Divorce mediation is a time-limited, confidential process in which both you and your spouse meet with a neutral third person (the mediator) who helps you decide on the division of parenting responsibilities, where your children will live, when your children will spend time with each parent, how parenting decisions will be made, and the financial issues of property and support. Mediation may be voluntarily chosen by the parties or it may be ordered by the Court in litigation. Whether Court ordered or voluntarily chosen, mediation is voluntary in that the parties may, but are not required, to reach an agreement about the disputed issues. The goal of mediation is to reach an agreement, the terms of which are in the parties’ control. In litigation, decision-making is turned over to a Judge or Master, who will make the decision for the parties.
Mediation of Child Custody and Visitation Disputes
If you are contesting custody of your children, mediation provides an opportunity for you to focus on the needs of the children, and to avoid the often highly adversarial atmosphere of the courtroom. Cases involving contested custody or visitation matters can be referred to mandatory mediation, provided that there is no allegation of domestic violence or child abuse.
Something to Consider About Mediation
"Mediation is an alternative to violence, self help, or litigation that differs from processess of counseling, negotiation, and arbitration. It can be defined as the process by which the participants, together with the assistance of a neutral person, systematically isolate disputed items in order ot develop options, consider alternatives, and reach a consensual settlement which will accomodate their needs. Meditation, is a process that emphasizes the partcipants own responsibility for making decisionsthat affect their lives. It is therefore a self-empowering process"
